We got a cat fence similar to “Purrfect fence” for the back yard and have two cat doors. We only let them out in the daylight hours. Quite expensive to make it safe enough and escape proof but they love it! We have lots of windows, cat trees, tunnels, and toys for inside play. We do play with them a lot and try to introduce novelty as we can.
Thanks so much for sharing this—it sounds like your cats have a really thoughtful and well-rounded setup.
The backyard cat fence with daylight-only access sounds like a great way to give them safe outdoor time, and I know that kind of setup can take time, effort, and investment to get right—so kudos for making it happen.
And I love how you’re mixing it up indoors too—with windows, cat trees, tunnels, and regular playtime. That kind of variety really does make a big difference, especially when you’re being intentional about keeping things interesting.
Appreciate you being part of the Golden Whiskers community and for giving your cats such a great life!
Thanks so much—I’m really glad it resonated with you! You’re not alone… I think a lot of us have (or have had) some bored kitties on our hands. Even small changes can make a big difference, and it’s been fun trying out new things with Niko and Milo lately.
Let me know if you try anything new—I’d love to hear how your crew responds! 🐾
I hadn't thought of opening closet doors sometimes. Great idea and they're liking it. One kitty was so delighted, she talked and chirped to me while exploring the closet and going in and out.
Window over our bed opens side to side... so alternating which side is open or opening both sides just a little adds something different. They do love the open windows! Whenever the weather is good, they get to hang out in the windows with bird baths and bird feeders outside.
Low furniture or med-large plastic storage containers at windows give them plenty of room to stretch out and watch the show outside, windows open or closed. Favorite hangouts for them are lounging in windows facing street. Watching all the people and dogs walking by ... squirrels and birds ... even foxes and deer. And we're in the city.
I love everything about this! 😻 I love that you are now opening the closet door sometimes. What a great reminder that even small changes—like opening a closet door or switching up the window view—can bring so much joy and stimulation. Your kitty chirping while exploring the closet absolutely made me smile 🐾❤️
And those window setups sound amazing! Bird baths, feeders, people-watching stations… your cats are living their best indoor lives with front-row seats to the nature show 🎥🐦🦊
Thanks so much for sharing what you're doing for your sweet kitties!

Thank you so much for this post, Scott. Great tips. We have some bored kitties around here, too.
