Your Cat's Symptoms Aren't Random - Here's What They're Really Telling You
If your cat keeps getting sick—or you’re stuck treating the same issues over and over—this might be the mindset shift you’ve been missing.
Hey Whisker Crew,
Have you ever felt like your cat’s health is a frustrating game of whack-a-mole?
One symptom goes away, and another one pops up. You visit the vet, try a new food, get a prescription… and yet somehow, your cat still isn’t really better.
I’ve been there.
When my cat Mia developed kidney disease, I didn’t know what questions to ask. I just did what I thought I was supposed to do—give her meds, change her food, keep her comfortable.
But what I didn’t do was ask the most important question:
“Why is this happening?”
Pam Roussell, a feline holistic health expert, was my guest on this week’s podcast where she talked all about why we should stop treating symptoms in our cats, and why we need to find the root cause of what’s going on.
If you’ve ever felt like your cat is stuck in a cycle of sickness, short-term fixes, and no clear answers, click below to listen to a short clip of my interview with Pam on what your cat’s symptoms are really telling you and how you can get out of this cycle.
🐱 The Real Reason Your Cat Isn’t Getting Better
Pam broke it down like this:
💥 Most cat parents are stuck in a reactive loop—treating symptoms instead of addressing root causes.
💊 Vets often offer meds and prescription food to manage symptoms, but this doesn’t solve the why behind vomiting, diarrhea, allergies, or chronic illness.
🧠 Instead, we need to start thinking like detectives.
✅ Pam’s Action Steps for Breaking the Cycle:
🔍 Ask better questions: “Why is this happening?” should be your go-to.
🧠 Put on your cat detective hat: Look at your cat’s food, poop, coat, energy, and behavior patterns.
⛽ Don’t fear symptoms: They’re like the check engine light in your car—your cat’s way of asking for help.
🚫 Stop relying only on meds and expensive prescription foods
👀 Watch for red flags: If your cat gets better for a few weeks and symptoms come roaring back, it’s not fixed—it’s being masked.
Pam says:
“If your cat’s not thriving—if they’re just surviving—it’s time to try something different.”

❤️ What I wish I had done differently with Mia
Looking back, I think I just trusted the process without asking questions. Mia lived to 20, and I’m grateful for every moment—but I can’t help but wonder how much more comfortable or vibrant those final years could have been if I’d known what I know now.
Now with Niko and Milo, it feels like I’m getting a second chance. I’m learning to be more curious. More tuned in. And way more proactive. That shift alone feels like an act of love.
🧡 What I’m doing differently with Niko & Milo:
Watching their energy and enthusiasm at mealtime
Observing poop, coat, and hydration more closely (hello, water fountain!)
Starting probiotics, eliminating kibble, feeding them human grade food.
Paying attention instead of just reacting
I’m learning that the little things—diet, play, emotional connection—add up over time.
🐾 This Week’s Cattitude Prompt:
What’s one recurring issue your cat has—and what deeper question could you ask about it this week?
Maybe it’s vomiting, skin irritation, or low energy.
Start by asking: Why might this be happening? and What haven’t I looked at yet?
