How Losing My Cats Led to a Hike That Saves Lives

After a few months away, I’m back with a new episode of Golden Whiskers, and there’s a special reason why.

On October 24, we’re holding our third annual Tails on Trails: A Hike to Save Pets in Knoxville, Tennessee.

But this event started long before the first hiker showed up.

In this episode, I share the story of Mia and Nomar, the two cats who were part of my life for 16 and 20 years, and how losing them led me to create something in their honor.

I talk about the grief that followed Mia’s passing, the role hiking played in helping me through it, and why I established the Nomar & Mia Compassion Endowment at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.

The goal is to build a $25,000 endowment that will eventually provide financial assistance to families struggling with emergency veterinary expenses. We’re not there yet, but every donation brings us closer.

I also share some of the challenges of organizing Tails on Trails, the pressure I’ve been putting on myself, and why I keep coming back to the two cats who inspired it all.
